Humboldt State University Athletics
The Humboldt State University Lumberjacks compete in football, volleyball, softball, women’s rowing, and men’s and women’s soccer, cross country, basketball, and track & field. The Lumberjacks compete in the NCAA’s Division II and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Student athletes include majors from all of Humboldt’s colleges and 47 different majors. All teams combined for an overall grade point average of 2.82 in 2003, and the retention rate for student athletes is higher than the overall student average at Humboldt. Student athletes are also very active in the local community, including regular events like the Food & Shoe Drive, Blood/Bone Marrow Drive, Holiday Food Drive, and the California Teachers Association reading program. Humboldt State is currently in the process of updating its athletics facilities, including improvements to the women’s locker rooms, a new boathouse and dock system on the waterfront, and a new softball facility that opened in February 2003. The most popular Lumberjacks sport is football, by far, and in the 2004/2005 season the Lumberjacks finished with a .500 record in all games and also in their conference.
Humboldt State University is an NCAA Division II School. Teams compete in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Men’s sports include football, soccer, cross country, basketball, and track & field. Women’s sports include volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, softball, rowing, and track & field. The sports teams are supported by a marching band. There is also a student cheer club. The team nick-name is the Lumberjacks
Athletic facilities at Humboldt State University include a new softball facility, an all-weather track, a stadium, and a boating center. Cross country runners can run in a community forest or a nearby state park.
Among the championships and awards that Humboldt State University has received are first place NCAA finishes in rowing, 53 conference championships, and national championships in softball and men’s cross country.
Student athletes volunteer in such activities as reading, youth sports clinics, and participating in blood drives. Admission to athletic events is free for HSU students, and they are well attended.
